Herbarium botanist Beverly Walters is part of a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)  which will allow for a critical research project to locate and assess at-risk plant communities growing on the four botancial properties - Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Nichols Arboretum, Mud Lake Bog, and Horner McLaughlin Woods.

Part old-fashioned fieldwork, part high-tech information-gathering, the $127,000 project is contemporary natural history for the long term. It’s also an institution-wide stewardship planning process—a high priority for the botanical gardens going forward.

The project runs June 2011 through May 2013 and will be supervised by our Natural Areas Manager Jeff Plakke.
