The Barnebya clade consists of the single neotropical genus Barnebya, which the authors suggested might be sister to the palaeotropical genus Acridocarpus. That suggestion has not been supported by molecular studies (Davis et al. 2001 [pdf], Davis et al. 2002 [pdf]); the latest evidence (Davis & Anderson, unpublished data) places Barnebya near the base of the family, like Acridocarpus, but with the Mcvaughia clade falling between the Acridocarpus and Barnebya clades.
