The Barnebya clade consists of the single neotropical genus Barnebya, which authors suggested might be sister to the palaeotropical genus Acridocarpus. That suggestion has not been supported by molecular studies (Davis et al. 2001 [pdf]; Davis et al. 2002 [pdf]). The phylogenetic tree published by Davis & Anderson (2010 [pdf]) placed Barnebya above the byrsonimoid clades, the Acridocarpus clade, and the Mcvaughia clade, sister to all the rest of the family.
