The University of Michigan Herbarium houses 161,100 collections of bryophytes including 1,664 type collections (1,338 moss types; 326 liverwort types). In addition to specimens from Michigan and the Great Lakes Region, the collection includes sizeable holdings from the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala), South America (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador), and the Philippines.

Important collections of bryophytes include those of H. H. Bartlett, H. A. Crum, F. Hermann, and W. C. Steere.
