ÍÑIGO GRANZOW-DE LA CERDA
Assistant Curator

Research Interests
I am interested in the systematics of the moss genus Tortula, and related taxa in the tribe Pottiae, in particular in the Western Mediterranean region. I have worked on taxonomy, phylogenetics, reproductive biology and cytogenetics on the genus Anomodon at a worldwide level.

Currently I am also conducting research of an entirely different nature. Since 1993 I have been studying tropical rainforest regeneration following catastrophic disturbance, namely in the form of hurricanes on moist tropical lowland regions. I have worked on post-disturbance forest dynamics in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, in a long-term study following Hurricane Joan of October 1988. I am particularly interested in questions of species richness and biodiversity of tree species. The research has been conducted with the support of several NSF grants (to John Vandermeer). The project has now expanded to a comparative study of post-agricultural succession, circumscribed to that same region as well as to that of El Petén, in the Guatemalan lowlands.
